DVD - Understanding Bharata Natyam
The DVD starts with the history of dance in Tamil Nadu, with an emphasis on the late Nayaka and Maratha periods. It examines the ritual functions of the devadasi or temple dancer, the public group performance of the kuravanci, and the fundamental execution of both nritta and abhinaya techniques. It continues with a discussion and demonstration of the marga or the seven-fold repertoire crystallized by the Tanjavur brothers in the nineteenth century. The alarippu, jatisvaram, sabdam, varnam, javali, and tillana are described and accompanied by excerpts from performances. It concludes with a discussion of "New Directions", or the transformation of Bharata natyam technique in the era after India’s Independance, and includes a short excerpt from Mrinalini Sarabhai's Memory is a Ragged Fragment of Eternity (1963).

DVD - Understanding Kuchipudi
Understanding Kuchipudi explores the solo dance tradition of Andhra Pradesh known as Kuchipudi or Bhagvata Mela Natakam devised by Vedantam Lakshminarayana Shastri in the last century. It examines the three sources from which Shastri culled his solo repertoire - the Aaya Sampradaya (temple traditions), the Kaceriatta (`concert’ tradition) and the Bhagavatam (Vaishnava narrative tradition). The former two were practised by the sanivaru or temple dancers of Andhra, while the latter was to be found in the repertoires of both temple dancers and Brahmin male performers in villages such as Kuchipudi. It also looks at history, technique of nrtta, and includes excerpts from the repertoire. Compositions such as Jatisvaram, Mandodari Sabdam, Ksetraya Padam, Bhamakalapam, Krsna Sabdam and Simhanandini are demonstrated.

DVD - Folk dances of India
India has a rich and living tradition of folk and tribal dancing and music. In the villages and smaller towns, festivals and rituals are celebrated with dancing as are the changing of the seasons. These vary hugely from region to region, and even within regions. In the western Indian state of Gujarat, for instance, the most widely danced froms are the dandiya ras and the garba. But from community to community and village to village these differ in movement, style and rhythm. This DVD brings you glimpses of this rich tradition interpreted by two dance groups, Darpana Academy’s JANAVAK, and Rangmilan. Both into the nuances, costumes, jewelry and music before presenting pieces.

DVD - The Rathwas of Chhota Udaipur
The myriad colours of India are made up not only of her textiles and crafts, but of her people, their music, dance, art and craft, of the languages they speak and the rituals that bind them. Amongst the early inhabitants of this complex land are the autochthonous people called the Adivasis, literally “those who dwelled earlier”. Spread over many regions of India, a huge and diverse group of them, numbering about 6 million, live in the western state of Gujarat. In many senses, they form the third India, an India that occupies neither the cities nor the villages, but the forests. Till recently many of them lived in scattered hamlets deep in the forest, following a life style that their ancestors had followed, devotees of an ancient form of nature worship where animal sacrifices were common. Even today, when urbanization has caught up with most parts of India, there are still tribes that closely guard their old ways, their art and ritual. This DVD brings to you the life, art and rituals of the Rathwas of Chhota Udaipur in Gujarat. Even in the ten years of the filming of their lives for this DVD, much has changed. Some of the rituals are no longer practised. Much of this material is archival footage.
